So like I bet 7th year after Lily and James started going out, Lily was kind of just automatically invited to join the marauders like, all of the time.

So she’d go hang out in the dorms with them and sit with them by the lake and at meals and just. all of the time. It stops being the four of them and becomes the five of them, and she starts to love all of them like a family. And she notices that Sirius and Remus never have girlfriends— even Peter goes out with a girl from Ravenclaw for a few weeks, but neither Sirius nor Remus pays any attention to girls.

So one day James has quidditch practice and she’s sitting the boys’ dorm with Remus and Sirius and Peter, just sprawled on the bed and she squints over at Sirius, who’s just flipping through a magazine, and eventually he looks up at her like, what? and she’s like, “Sirius, I have a friend who’s really interested in you.”

And he just smiles a little bit and turns back to his magazine. “Do you.”

“But how,” Peter interrupts, not even looking up from his essay, “could Sirius ever even think about your friend when he’s so in love with our Moony?”

and Remus and Sirius both laugh so hard that she thinks it must be some inside joke, so she laughs too and then James comes back from quidditch so the subject changes

No one says anything to her and she never really thinks about it again until one day she goes up to the dorms and goes in without knocking like usual and Remus is all over Sirius, straddling his lap in his bed and both of their shirts are unbuttoned and Remus is working on the button on Sirius’ pants

and their heads snap up when the door opens, and all three of them are bright red. and Remus is like, “Um. Hey Lily. James is… not here.”

And she’s like “I see that.”

and he’s like “Well. Do you mind. Coming back a little later?”

and she’s like, “Yeah. Shit, sorry,” and leaves.

Later Remus finds her sitting on the ground near the fire and he sits next to her and smiles shyly. “sorry about earlier,” he tells her.

"I just. I thought it was a joke. I never noticed you two acting differently. And you don’t act. Together. In front of us.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to notice us acting differently,” Remus says softly, nudging her with his elbow to get her to look up at him. “We’ve been together since 4th year.”

And Lily just looks at him and she realizes all of the ways that Sirius is distressed mornings after the full moon or Remus is a little strained in a way James or Peter just aren’t when Sirius gets a letter from home, and she’s just like. “Oh.” and then, “James and Peter know?”

and Remus laughs. “Yes, they know. Is it okay?”

And she nods and follows him back up to the dorm.
